1. The Revolutionary War had a big role on the transformation from housewifery to Republican Motherhood. The Revolutionary War gave women the chance to show that they were patriotic, and some women dressed up as men and enlisted in the army. Other women took over family farms, shops, and buisnesses. Mainly though the Revolutionary War let women take the role of man at home. With the absense of men at home the belief that women should raise their children to keep the ideals of republicanism was created. Republican Motherhood made the role of women important, raising children with republican belief (the future soldeirs and leaders of America), education, and civic duty.
2. The consequences of Republican Motherhood on women were that they were known as the care takers of future leaders and soldiers. Women would soon be able to get their own education and gained alot of respect. Soon educated women would make up a very big middle class that with no voice would soon speak out.
3. The significance of the ideology of Republican Motherhood as a stage in the process of women's socialization is that women would "learn their place" as to take care of the young and prepare them to be the countries next leaders and soldiers. Women would also become more respected for all of the "men's" responsibilities that they took over when the war began.
1. Unlike the usual very formal and classical portraits of mothers and their children the portrait of Mary Gibson Tilghman is very different in comparison. The setting is much more loose and less formal, the mother seems happy as do the two children. Its a more relaxed picture compared to the classical very fancy serious portraits.
2. The mother serves at the center of the portrait because she is the main aspect of the portrait. If further analyzed the mother is the center of the children's lives, she would teach them everything they needed to know and prepare them for the future. The mother looks happy, relaxed, and wise. She is republican rather then aristocratic because aristocrats showed wealth and nobility, and shows more of a strong value for family.
3. Her sons exhibit values of freedom with the bird, and dependence on the mother.
4. Mrs. Tilghman's arms are around the girl and not around the boy. Her arms only being around the girl could signify her having the boy to grow to become a man, and to be strong.
