Washington's Farewell Address LAD #7

Washington's Farewell Address was a message to the American people that he wrote September 1796 that had three major principles America should follow as to public affairs. The first was that conflict and hate between different groups of people should be put to a rest, because unity would highly benefit the nation. Second "the baneful effects of the spirit of party" should be "muted" because they threatened the liberty of people and impeded the President to guide the nation in its best interest. Third America shouldn't have permanent alliances with other countries but rather make alliances when needed, so that America would not be dragged into foreign affairs by its "permanent" ally. Despite the Farewell address many people were against it and only the third principle was followed. If the other two principles had been followed certain events could have been avoided.

Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality LAD #6

George Washing wrote the Proclamation of Neutrality in 1793. The main goal of the Proclamation was to stay out of the conflict between Britain and France. The Proclamation assured that America would stay out of the war between Britain and France. Despite Americas neutrality in the war Britain captured hundreds of American trading ships. Britain's acts angered already furious Americans and made them want to join the French side of the war even more. Washington felt that the best way for America to grow and become stronger as a young nation was to focus on itself and stay out of foreign affairs.

Republican Motherhood

1. The Revolutionary War had a big role on the transformation from housewifery to Republican Motherhood. The Revolutionary War gave women the chance to show that they were patriotic, and some women dressed up as men and enlisted in the army. Other women took over family farms, shops, and buisnesses. Mainly though the Revolutionary War let women take the role of man at home. With the absense of men at home the belief that women should raise their children to keep the ideals of republicanism was created. Republican Motherhood made the role of women important, raising children with republican belief (the future soldeirs and leaders of America), education, and civic duty.
2. The consequences of Republican Motherhood on women were that they were known as the care takers of future leaders and soldiers. Women would soon be able to get their own education and gained alot of respect. Soon educated women would make up a very big middle class that with no voice would soon speak out.
3. The significance of the ideology of Republican Motherhood as a stage in the process of women's socialization is that women would "learn their place" as to take care of the young and prepare them to be the countries next leaders and soldiers. Women would also become more respected for all of the "men's" responsibilities that they took over when the war began.

1. Unlike the usual very formal and classical portraits of mothers and their children the portrait of Mary Gibson Tilghman is very different in comparison. The setting is much more loose and less formal, the mother seems happy as do the two children. Its a more relaxed picture compared to the classical very fancy serious portraits.
2. The mother serves at the center of the portrait because she is the main aspect of the portrait. If further analyzed the mother is the center of the children's lives, she would teach them everything they needed to know and prepare them for the future. The mother looks happy, relaxed, and wise. She is republican rather then aristocratic because aristocrats showed wealth and nobility, and shows more of a strong value for family.
3. Her sons exhibit values of freedom with the bird, and dependence on the mother.
4. Mrs. Tilghman's arms are around the girl and not around the boy. Her arms only being around the girl could signify her having the boy to grow to become a man, and to be strong.

LAD #5

1. The faction are very difficult to eliminate because because peoples opinions. Peoples opinions are mainly different because of their social status high class, middle class, and poor. It is very difficult to get everyone to agree on one thing.

2. If factions cannot be removed then they can be controlled, and there are two ways to do this, as stated in the paper. The first way is to remove the causes of the factions, which is liberty, and this can not be done if a country wants to survive without upheaval. The second way which would be more effective and safer would be to control the effects of the factions.

Blog #4-Revolution article

  1. Through reading the “rethinking the revolution article I learned unlike it is perceived by many people that the revolutionary war was actually a very bloody, costly, and even less vital. The revolutionary war was America longest declared war. It lasted eight years and the casualties on both sides were huge.
  2. The civil war seems to overshadow the brutality and truth of the revolutionary war. Some of the most famous paintings of the revolutionary war are inside the United States Capital building. The paintings depict drummer boys before marching armies, soldiers who have not shot, bayonets still sheathed, and fields with no dead or wounded. The paintings are very different from those of the Civil War which show thousands of dead and wounded in fields and the true gore of war. Overall it is clear the brutality and truth of the revolutionary war are not noticed by many.
  3. Not even George Washington spoke about the brutality of the Revolutionary war or the major battles. This only further “downplays” the revolutionary war. It is said that historians have written more about political debates and the state of the growing country that wanted independence, then the actual war and battles. Obviously this was not done on purpose but the actual war of the revolutionary war was conveyed as unimportant or “inconsequential”
  4. The British had hired mercenaries such as the Hessian soldiers from Germany, and also other armies from different nations in Europe to help them defeat America. Many of the mercenaries and British soldiers died on the trip over the Atlantic. After thinking about all of the information and pictures I have heard about the revolutionary war I had never really thought of how difficult and dangerous the trip over the Atlantic must have been at that time.
  5. In the revolutionary war innocent people were very heavily affected. Diseases brought from both the British and American soldiers reached civilians and killed them by the hundreds. The British executed coastal raids on towns and killed thousands of civilians.

Declaration of Independence 3 point summarization

Michael Mariuz
Mr. Decarlo
AP U.S.
September 18, 2011

  1. In the Declaration of Independence there are many different “principles” within it that are very democratic. The most important principle in the Declaration is that all men are created equal. All the men who are created equal have “unalienable” rights this means that these rights that men are given can not be taken away no matter what. At any time that the government takes away these rights the people have that nation have the right to overthrow the government and make needed change. These “unalienable” rights are; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  2. The list of grievances is a list of twenty-seven complaints the colonist had with Britain and the way it governed the colonies. Here are some of the most important grievances; “He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures”, “For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world and For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent”, “For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury”, “For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments”, and last ‘He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within”.
     3. The conclusion of the Declaration of Independence talks about how America had tried countless times      to reason with Britain about their grievances. America felt that Britain had not listened to their problems and had created more problems than solved for America. Separation from Britain was inevitable.

Zenger questions

1. Jon Peter Zenger was a half german half american publisher, editor, journalist, and printer in New York city. He took part in a very important legal case, and laid out the foundations for freedom of the press.

2. The controversy of Zengers charges were that people tought his claims were false even if they were true. During the Zenger trial Hamilton tried to point out that if a statement is true, it i true and nothing can be done to make it different.

3. The influence on the American governmental tradition was that lawyers could now say what they wanted as long as it was true. Judges also were able to view cases in a different. It created a great balance in the judicial systems

4. The lasting influence of The Zenger case or trial is that it had a big influence on law suits and cases in general. Mainly it was the huge advancements made in freedom of the press. Because of the Zenger trials news papers and other ways of criticizing people or things could be said without going to court as long as what they were stating was true.

Mayflower Compact question

1. The concepts included in the may flower compact are; the creation of a "government" or some sort of center that could control a population. Another concept included in the may flower concept is that of a majority rule. Meaning with more people comes more power.

2. The mayflower compact reflects an attachment to both the new and old world because of the much of the foundations and ideas for governments were similar to that of Britain. Many laws were the same or had the same basic ideas. Also the colonists still had a sense of loyalty toward the king.

3. The difference between the mayflower compact and the fundamental orders of Connecticut is that, the mayflower compact was created to establish some sort of a government to keep the colonists in order. The fundamental orders of Connecticut were created to have a full on democracy that would be permanent. Over all the main difference is that the mayflower compact was more of a guide for the colonists, unlike the democracy of the fundamental orders of Connecticut.

4. The colonists of Connecticut took this sort of approach because they wanted stronger government that would unify the different areas together. Having all of the different towns under one government would create a very stable colony.

5. The fundamental orders reflect a fear safeguard against a single person or small group taking power because the orders are set up as a democracy so that everybody has a voice and not just one person or group can take power, or have a majority of power. There were also elections held in which candidates were elected soley by the people.
